DJ DMSR is one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneur, producer and without doubt, Canada’s most loved radio personality. And he is only just starting to hit his stride…
We had the chance to ask Terry Davidson aka DJ DMSR a few questions – read on to get his take on music, and finding a career in radio…
What led you to a career in radio?
I chose radio as a career because music and all entertainment surrounding music is my passion.
What do you love most about online radio?
I absolutely love the freedom of online radio. There are no restrictions on what I can play or which format I want to broadcast. Also…saying whatever is on my mind without repercussions is always fun. I also love getting emails and correspondence from listeners all over the world. I’m happy to be recognized in many different countries and regions.
What most excites you about the future of online radio?
I think because there are no rules and no censorship is what makes the future exciting for this platform. People are able to broadcast exactly what they want and not be confined to the rules of local radio. The public audience is starting to realize it and more are tuning in everyday. The future of online radio is 100 percent exciting.
“Local, local, local” has always been radio’s mantra. How do you keep your station visible and involved in the community?
Just keep grinding away and spreading the word. You know the old saying…tell 2 people and they tell 2 people and so on it keeps going. Providing local content and advertising for local events also keeps it local for sure.
What your talk show is about?
That’s a question I often get asked. My talk show has no format or schedule. I go on the air when I have something to say or whenever I feel a topic is important. I’ve never conformed to a set daily schedule at certain times. I am however in the process of putting together a series of scheduled shows due to demand and suggestions from loyal listeners.
Are you interviewing? WHo?
I actually have some big interviews coming up. When they are scheduled…they will be listed on our Facebook page…Soundkatz Radio.
What is the most challenging part of the job?
Honestly…I don’t find challenges pertaining to this job. It is so much fun and exciting that I don’t even think about a challenge. But if I had to absolutely pick a challenge…hmmm…I need to think about it…lol.
What artist would we be surprised to find on your personal playlist?
My personal playlist? Hmmm…I listen to so much personally…I think most people would be surprised to go through my iPod and find Justin Bieber. Lol…you can thank my daughter for that. The Biebs is actually really talented. I’m a Bieleber…lol
If you could add one full-time position to your budget right now, what would it be?
Probably a videographer that could just be by my side all day everyday documenting every move in the studio and outside. It would be great to start a 24/7 video channel. Lol. I don’t think anybody wants to follow me constantly with a camera.
What advice would you give people new to the business?
If it’s your passion and it’s what you like…keep at it and don’t get discouraged if it starts off slow. Make sure to use social media. Also…word of mouth has and will always be the greatest form of advertising.
