Fifteen-year-old Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Actress and Model, Janelle Nucum, began her passion for music at the age of two, then started performing on stage professionally at the age of eight.
Her devotion to music derived from the influence of her family loving music and grew stronger as she got older. So strong that she couldn’t imagine life without it.
As her stage time grew more frequent, she began expanding her presence in other areas of the entertainment world through theater and live productions, modeling, and commercial print ads. During the process, she managed to land a lead role in a short film and various TV commercials.
She dedicated over five years of training in both singing and acting to enhance her skill and talent all the while attending various workshops to increase her knowledge and experience overall. In addition to her efforts to further her career, she joined a national singing and acting competition and won both a placement as a Junior Commercial Print Model and Junior Singer of the Year.
Soon after, she signed independently to a record label, Storm Central, LLC who offered her global distribution via Ingrooves Music Group/Universal Music Group Distribution. Shortly thereafter, she began recording her debut single “Pages” which she co-wrote late last year with National Billboard Charting, Recording Artist Christine Storm. Janelle hopes to reach an audience of all ages with her song and to inspire them to reach for their dreams. She believes that if you work hard enough and never give up, you can accomplish anything that you want in life.
You can find Janelle’s single “Pages” on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Tidal, iHeartRadio, Rhapsody and more and in over 600 online retailers worldwide.
Do you see yourself as a mentor to younger female artists?
I would love to be considered as a mentor. Currently, I am just new in the business and I still have a lot to learn but I hope someday I can be considered as a mentor to younger artists.
What do you think is your fan’s favorite song right now?
I just released my debut single “Pages” and it is the first song I have released so far so I can assume my fan’s favorite song is “Pages”.
Who would you love to perform or write with?
It has always been a dream of mine to perform with Adele. She has been my musical inspiration since I was 8 years old. I actually sang her song “Rolling in the Deep” for one of my very first recitals. She has this incredibly powerful voice and I admire how she can command any stage with it. I would also love to work with Ed Sheeran. His songs touch people on another level and I admire that so much. As a songwriter myself, I would love to write a song with him and learn his ways of writing such amazing songs that mean so much to so many people.
Any places you haven’t been that you’ve been dying to go to?
I would love to visit Paris, France. It has been a place where I have always wanted to go since I was a little girl. It just has this atmosphere that is so magical and you can’t compare to anywhere else. I constantly read books set in Paris just so I can imagine that I’m there. In fact, my whole room has the Eiffel Tower all over it.
What have been some of the highlights for you and your music in a past year?
Releasing my debut single “Pages” has definitely been the highlight of my year. It is such a dream come true to have a song that I am so passionate about that is available on over 600 online retailers worldwide. This has been my dream since I was a little girl. It has been such a surreal few months and I am so thankful for the already incredible journey and the tremendous and overwhelming amount of support I have received.
Did you always want to be a musician? Can you recall your earliest musical memory?
Yes, I have always wanted to be a musician. I can’t imagine a time in my life where I didn’t want to be one. I began my passion for music at the age of 2. My mom always tells me stories about how I would sing all day long and would never stop. I would always sing and act in front of the mirror and put on shows for my family and my mom knew that I already had a love for music and performing at that age.
Do you remember the very first song you ever wrote? What was it about? How do you think you have grown as a songwriter since you first started writing them?
My debut single “Pages” is the first song I ever co-wrote professionally. However, I remember writing a song when I was a very young girl and it had the same message about “Pages”. It was about reaching for your dreams. I remember going up to my mom and telling her I wrote a song and I would just sing any lyric that came to mind. I find it funny how at such a young age, I wrote a song about wanting to achieve your dreams and now here I am at 15, releasing a song with the same message. I wrote my first song when I was a little girl and now that I have gained more experience in music, it has helped me grow as a songwriter.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Pages”? How were the recording and writing process?
“Pages” is a song that people of all ages can relate to. It’s about wanting to make something of yourself and wanting to achieve your dreams. It’s about not being a random face in the yearbook. Everyone has goals in their life and everyone has been a part of a yearbook and I hope this song inspires people to reach for their dreams and strive to be the best that they can be. The writing process was such a great experience since I was writing what I really feel and what I really desire and putting it into a song. I loved the recording process and I loved bringing what I’ve written to life, building it up and hearing the final product.
When do you hope to release a full-length album? Is that currently a goal of yours?
We are currently focusing on “Pages” right now but I would love to release a full-length album one day. I have so many songs that I’ve written that I’m passionate about and so many songs that I have yet to write. Hopefully, one day it will become an album which is always been my goal.
What if anything has surprised you about the music industry? What do you think has been your biggest challenge? And what do you think has come really naturally to you?
It has surprised me how much work is put into one song. There’s the songwriting process, then there’s the recording process, then the post-production. It takes so much time and effort just to make one song and I learned so much and had fun doing it. My biggest challenge is getting somebody to lift me off my feet and get started. There is a lot of competition out there and I am grateful for the opportunity I was given and to have someone open the door for me. I am so grateful for the people that made this possible. The recording process has come really natural to me. I have always dreamed of being in the studio one day and once I finally got started, it felt like I was always meant to be there. The recording studio is my favorite place.
When you aren’t performing, working in the studio, what do you like to do for fun? How do you unwind from it all?
I love to read when I have my free time. The sky is the limit when it comes to my imagination and I feel like the perfect way for me to explore my imagination is to read. Books take you to places you couldn’t even imagine possible and I love how books can just take you to a totally different world. The perfect way to unwind for me is curling up in my bed with a good book.
At the end of the day, what do you hope is the message of your music? What do you hope listeners take away from your songs?
My goal with “Pages” is to inspire and motivate people to strive to be the best that they can be. I want my music to empower people and take the message that is in my song and apply it to their own life. Whenever I sing, I really feel the song and I hope the listeners can feel the emotion through the song as well. I hope that my song can touch them and that they can relate to it.
Is there anything else that you would like to share with our readers about yourself or your music?
I’m just a girl with big dreams as well. I’m passionate about what I do and I work hard to make my dreams come true. I believe that with discipline, perseverance, persistence, determination and drive, you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Dream big and believe in yourself.
