In a rare public statement, Prince Harry has both confirmed his relationship with African American actress Meghan Markle and condemned the racist and sexist abuse against her by the British press.
Markle, the 35-year-old daughter of an African American mother and white father, is best known for playing paralegal Rachel Zane in the USA network drama “Suits.” She has also worked with the United Nations on gender equality and is a global ambassador for the charity World Vision Canada.
Over the last few month, rumors spread like wildfire about the two’s involvement and Markle has since been the subject of many racist comments by the British Press. The press has also involved her family and associates. It is to believe that Markle’s mother has had to struggle past paparazzi to reach her front door, reporters and photographers have tried to illegally enter Markle’s home and publications have offered “substantial
bribes” to her ex-boyfriend. Prince Harry’s reps says that they definitely crossed a line and he has come to the defense of his new girlfriend.
“Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper, the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments,” read the statement from Kensington Palace.
“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm. He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”
It is sad that Prince Harry had to defend a situation like this and we hope that the British Press can give them a break, in the name of love!
